Homemade Handbags Project: The Bra Bag
It began as a contest to raise awareness for Breast Cancer and has become a major, if
unusual, trend. Making a handbag out of a bra may sound like a strange thing to do, but the results can be very attractive. This is an
inexpensive, fun homemade handbags project where you can let your imagination go wild. The first thing you need to do for this homemade handbags
project is go shopping.
In order to make homemade handbags out of a bra, you will need to purchase a soft cup,
strapless bra. One with light padding works best. You don’t need to get an expensive bra either. Select a plain bra in either a B or C cup,
depending on how large of a purse you want. You will also need some embellishments. Fringe works well, as do tassels. You will also need
something to use as a handle. You can purchase a handle, or use a length of twisted cord. Lastly, you will need fabric glue, and/or a needle and
thread.
When you sit down to begin your homemade handbags project, you will have to cut off the
straps and the elastic back so that just the cups remain. If you are using fringe, glue it to the inside edge of one cup (the underwire part).
Then glue or sew the two cups together. You can embellish the cups in any way you would like. Then attach the handle or cord. Another option is
to create a wristlet using a piece of stretchy lace. If the trim does not look as smooth as you would like along the bottom, you can use a wide
piece of ribbon over it. This is a bag that can have a lot of trimmings, so don’t be afraid to pile them on...
